R-Dog Post Park is an official, town-affiliated group responsible for the leash-free area in Post Park. We act as a liaison with the town. Park monitors (who are volunteers and dog-owners) are generally responsible for the well-being of the area and its users.
As part of our mandate we fund raise for the Oakville & District Humane Society. Since 2001 we have raised over $200,000.00 at our annual Cause for Paws Martini parties.
Post Park has been an unofficial meeting place for dog walkers in Oakville for more that forty years. In 1995 the town sent notices the leash laws would be rigorously enforced and dog walkers felt pressure to make their morning ritual official. They requested an off-leash park. The first request was turned down.
Three hundred signatures on a petition from dog owners and neighbours near Post Park as wll as a request from another group of dog walkers in west Oakville for their own park reopened the dialogue. The town council agreed to give the concept of an off-leash park for dogs a one year trial run starting April 1997. Permanent approval was given May 1, 1998.
Leash-free zones were set up on condition that the users maintain them. Post Park's leash free zone is administered by R-DOG Post park (Responsible Dog Owners Group, Post Park).
